Coming Up Short: Columbia U and 'Global Challenges'

It's old news by now that Columbia University's Lisa Anderson, dean of the school of international and public affairs, invited Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to speak at Columbia's World Leaders Forum while the Iranian President was in New York City to address the United Nations.

What I didn't realize is that the mission of the Forum is "to examine global challenges and explore cultural perspectives."

Now I understand why Mr. Ahmadinejad was extended this invitation. By "examining global challenges," he can talk about how he plans to wipe out the Jews. And by "exploring cultural perspectives," he can share his views on why the Holocaust is a myth. Yet any Columbia student who reads a newspaper, uses a computer, listens to the radio or watches the news on television is already aware of the Iranian president's thoughts on Jews, Israel, America and other matters.

Dean Anderson, wasn't the real reason you invited Mr. Ahmadinejad was because he's anti-Israel, anti-American and a thorn in the side of the Bush Administration? And that's good enough for you. Plus, this was a sure way to get media attention for yourself, your school and your program. You had to know the reaction this would get. Very cynical. Very malicious. Very telling.
